THE VERMONT MILITIA

Remnants of the Vermont Militia can still be found today at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. As an undergraduate, the author was taught history by a commissioned officer from the Vermont Militia. These commissions are provided to Norwich administrators and faculty, if needed, so that they may participate as officers in Norwich’s Military College of Vermont.

It is a thrilling, weekend sight for any Vermont history buff to see the Corps of Cadet’s parade in front of the President of Norwich University, who, today, is the highest ranking officer in the Vermont Militia.

Norwich University was founded in 1819 and is the birthplace of the Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (ROTC).
